The sad thing about bread

I’ve been baking bread for nearly a year and a half now. Not a long time in the grand scheme of things but it has changed my views on bread completely. When I decided I was going to make my own, I wanted to do it the old fashioned way…with my hands. And I’m really glad I did. It’s made me much more appreciative of a staple food we all take for granted.

I feel a bit sad when I go to the supermarket and see a wall of hundreds of perfectly square loaves of bread wrapped in plastic. They’re churned out with limp crusts, no taste and full of additives. And therefore, the only thing this bread is ever destined to be is toast or a quick sandwich where the filling is more important than the actual bread.
