Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Soap (liquid)
June 3, 2008
Dr. Bronner’s liquid castille soap is legendary for it’s 18 uses. This soap is rich in oils and natural fragrance from essential oils.
I bought this bottle of Dr. Bronner’s soap for 2 reasons:
- It is said to be an 18 in 1 soap that you can use for everything from brushing your teeth, washing your dishes and using in the shower – which got me intrigued!
- To read Dr. Bronner’s philosophy called “The Moral ABC” printed on each label
The first question I had when I bought this is was “What is ‘pure-castille’ soap?” According to the Dr. Bronner site, it has this name because,
“In earlier centuries, an all-vegetable based soap was made in the Castile region of Spain from local olive oil. By the turn of this century, “Castile” had come to mean any vegetable oil-based soap, versus animal (tallow) fat-based soap. “Pure-Castile” is now also your guarantee that what you are using is a real ecological and simple soap, not a complex blend of detergents with a higher ecological impact due to the waste stream during manufacture and slower biodegradability.”
The main ingredients of the soap are water and oils. When I squeezed it out of the bottle it felt quite thin and watery. But once it mixed with water and I started to rub it onto my hands, it created a very rich lather which to my surprise, rinsed away extremely easily leaving no traces of oil.
A few trials of Dr. Bronners liquid soap:
On my teeth: In the Dr. Bronners Soapbox trailer, Dr. Bronner says you can brush your teeth with his soap, so that’s what I tried! I did hesitate for a couple of moments before putting this stuff in my mouth, but oddly enough it didn’t taste at all soapy! The lavender was very strong (only because it was in my mouth so I could smell and taste it) so I washed my mouth out and thankfully there was no soapy aftertaste. I don’t think I’ll be replacing my regular toothpaste with this product but it’s probably my fault for opting for lavender rather than peppermint!
On my hair: Using this on my hair was much more successful than using it in my mouth! It bubbled up alot (even without the SLS) when I rubbed it in, but rinsed away and left my hair literally squeaky clean. I did run quite alot of water through my hair because I was conscious of the fact that it was largely an oil based soap, but it wasn’t a problem. It left no greasiness and was just as moisturising as my regular shampoo but I think without using conditioner with it, my hair could get quite frizzy.
In the shower: This product was great as shower soap because I could use it for everything! It left the shower a bit slippery but this could have been because I used it to wash my hair, my body and my face with it.
In the bath: Smells great and produced a small amount of bubbles which dissolved fairly quickly.
On my face: My skin did feel a little dry after using this on my face but it could be because I have quite sensitive skin.
I love this soap and love the fact that you can use it for so many things! If you are going back-packing or on holiday and trying to travel light, this is a great product to buy.
- Pros: Great value for money as you can use it for so many things, rich lather
- Cons: None…
